Muso Shinden ryū

Muso Shinden ryū (夢想神伝流) is a sword-based martial arts school developed by Nakayama Hakudo in 1932. The school is based on Hakudo-sensei’s studies of both branches of Hasegawa Eishin ryū (Tanimura-ha & Shimomura-ha). Today Muso Shinden ryū is one of the most practiced styles of iaido in both Japan and the rest of the world. Due to this it can differ slightly in its adaptation depending on the teacher. In Umekawa Budokai we practice the style as it is taught by Ishido Shizufumi-sensei.

You can see Ishido-sensei demonstrating Muso Shinden ryū at the Kyoto Taikai in 2017 (to the right in the video).

There are three series of kata in Muso Shinden ryū, with the last series featuring two subseries: sitting and standing kata.
